TIMES2 Academy Freshman, Sierra Martinez, Ranked #1 by USA Boxing

December 17, 2018 (Providence, Rhode Island) – Sierra Martinez, a ninth-grade student at TIMES2 Academy in Providence, Rhode Island, has been ranked as the number one boxer in her division (junior women, 119-pound class) by USA Boxing’s Team USA. The ranking was determined during the 2018 Elite and Youth National Championships which took place at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah from December 1 though December 8, 2018. The event is described as “the epicenter” by USA Boxing's special projects consultant, Al Valenti.

Sierra began boxing at age 11 and now trains as a member of Team Serious, a registered U.S. boxing club based in Smithfield, Rhode Island. She defeated the previously number one ranked Faith Mendez of Reading, Pennsylvania to secure the number one spot for the current year. USA Boxing’s Events and Boxing Operations Manager, Michael Campbell credits Sierra’s “experience and no fear style of boxing” for catapulting her to the top even as she competed against older and more seasoned opponents.

Sierra’s status as the number one ranked junior woman in the 119-pound division places her in the High Performance division where she will have the opportunity to train in Colorado Springs, Colorado with high level coaching staff such as Kay Koroma who served as a member of Team USA’s coaching staff at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Internationally, Sierra will represent Team USA at matches in Bulgaria and Japan.
