October 29, 2018 (Providence, Rhode Island) - TIMES2 STEM Academy is excited to announce its partnership with The Swearer Center for Public Service at Brown University. The mission of the three-year partnership is to collaborate to support TIMES2 STEM Academy’s programs and services and to advance the student learning goals of the Swearer Center such as civic engagement, critical reflection and integrative learning.
The cornerstone of the partnership will be the placement of 20 to 40 Brown University student volunteers who will serve as in-school and after-school tutors for Times² STEM Academy K-12 students and its enrichment programs. The partnership will also feature a Social Justice Fellowship program, a Mini Visiting Lecture series and Leadership Development Talks.
Open since 1998, TIMES² STEM Academy is a K-12 accredited charter public school committed to improving mathematics, engineering and science studies for urban youth in Providence, Rhode Island.
Times² STEM Academy prepares America’s next scientists, engineers and leaders by providing a rigorous academic program aligned with the state's requirements. The school name, Times2 is an acronym, which means: To Improve Mathematics, Engineering and Science Studies. Times² STEM Academy is the only K-12 STEM school in Rhode Island.
In 1986, then-Brown University President Howard Swearer founded one of the first public service centers in the nation, now named for him — the Swearer Center for Public Service. Today, the Howard R. Swearer Center works with more than 1,200 Brown students, through and with 100+ community partners -- more than half of which are in the Greater Providence area.
