Times2 Receives $25,000 Grant

Middle High School Dean, Celeste Terry-Lo, on behalf of Times2 STEM Academy, applied for receieved a $25,000 grant. In partnership with national board member Linnea Roberts, New Leaders presents the Roberts Award for School Innovation to recognize outstanding New Leader Principals who develop innovative solutions to address critical challenges within their school communities.

The Roberts Award represents a one-time grant of $25,000 that can be used to fund a project during the 2016-2017 school year, or during the summer of 2017.

The award was open to all current school leaders who have completed the Aspiring Principals Program. Awardees will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • The school leader has identified a clear enrichment need for a subset of children within the school and has thoughtfully developed a project that will have a significant, measurable and sustainable impact on the personal and academic growth of those students.
  • The school’s principal has demonstrated a strong commitment to the New Leaders community.

The Times2 STEM Academy Summer STEAM Program will develop a summer curriculum in which principles of art and design will be utilized to provide students and the community exposure to the concept of design, but also to improve math skills with our students. The program will be sustain through partnerships with community organizations such as Rhode Island School of Design. The summer program will focus on three tracks: graphic design, architecture and video game design. The program will be for 6 weeks with a day program and evening classes. There will be an open enrollment with classes capped at 15 students. The classes will focus on the following grades: 4-6, 7-8, 9-11. There will be a total of 3-6 classes based on interest taken place with one evening course for community members to partake and receive college credit. The teaching staff will be community volunteers/ graduate students to work with the students during the day. There will be a pre and post assessments for the students to demonstrate growth in math using the principles of design.
