Youth STEM TALKS RI set to Inspire the Next Generation of Innovation

At the Bristol campus of Roger Williams University, speakers will talk to
200 middle- and high-school students from Rhode Island public and charter schools

BRISTOL, R.I., March 7, 2018 – TIMES² Institute and Roger Williams University will host STEM Talks RI Youth on Thursday, March 8, at RWU’s Bristol campus. Speakers will address 200 middle- to high-school students from Rhode Island public and charter schools, talking to them about the science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

“STEM Talks RI’s mission is to stimulate interest in STEM fields for underrepresented populations by exposing them to professionals that they identify with so that they see themselves in STEM careers and know that they have the ability to pursue them if they so choose,” said Erin Conley, TIMES² Institute Director.

“We hope to inspire the next generation of problem solvers, innovators and world changers from right here in Rhode Island!” said Dr. Rudolph Moseley Jr., TIMES² Executive Director.

The event, which runs from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Campus Recreation Center, will feature three speakers: Professor Lyrical, Tara Pratap Ebsworth and Justin Shaifer. Professor Lyrical will speak to students about the intersection of STEM and Hip Hop. Tara Pratap Ebsworth is an MIT graduate working at Ximedica who is passionate about breaking down barriers for people from underrepresented groups to enter engineering. Justin Shaifer is the executive director of Fascinate Inc., will speak on “Why STEM is Dope.”

This is the second in a series of three smaller STEM talks. The first, hosted in collaboration with Warwick Public Schools, brought speakers to engage with both formal and informal educators. The final in the three-part series will take place this spring with student speakers who will share their STEM successes with peers and community members.

“I am excited to reinvigorate the relationship with TIMES² Institute. We’ve had TIMES² graduates attend Roger Williams University in the past, and we’d like to ramp that up,” said Don Mays, director of RWU’s Intercultural Center. “In general, we’d like Roger Williams University to become recognized as a destination for under-represented students in the STEM field.”
